Green marketing is the process of marketing businesses that is presumed to be doing good for the environment. For example their product or service may be eco-friendly or produced in an environmentally friendly way. It could also be marketed in an environmentally sound way. For example using the internet to market your business instead of printing lots of marketing materials that often end up in the trash. Green marketing is about not only living up to best practices when it comes to the environment, but also letting your consumers know about it.

Why green marketing is important?

Green marketing is important for a number of reasons. What type of world would you rather live in? A polluted landscape filled with discarded single use plastics, dirty water that you cant drink and air that is hard to breath? Or a society that takes measures to ensure the planet is safe to live in for our future generations.

It has become more and more popular as people have become increasingly concerned with our environmental issues and the impact is has caused to wild life. There is a slice of the market that is willing to pick a business just because of what they do for the environment or the community. Especially with the younger generations as they are expected to experience more devastating effects of climate change within their lifetime.

Green marketing can involve a number of different things.

  • You could also decide to skip printed materials altogether and focus on internet marketing strategies.
  • Adopting sustainable business practices.
  • Creating eco-friendly messaging. This includes positioning your products or services as a better choice for the environment. You can focus your marketing communication to talk about your product’s benefits to the environment and community.
  • Sourcing locally saves on emissions created when shipping a product from overseas. These countries usually don’t follow best practices when it comes to the environment either. A lot of these developing countries place economic gain way ahead of their concern for the environment.
  • Having a recycling program or a responsible way to dispose waste.
  • Using eco-friendly power sources or website hosting.
